OLDER FOLKS

I saw some older folks today.
They struggled now to get about.
I wondered how they got that way;
But then I didn't want to shout.

The stride that might have marched to war
Is now a shuffle one foot long.
I see them hoping for one more,
Asking to whom their legs belong.

Some walkers used, others had canes.
It didn't use to be like this.
They don't remember all these pains.
What happened to that life of bliss?

Their sight's not what it used to be.
They can't go long without a break.
For meals they have just toast and tea.
A greater effort they can't make.

Barn dances they remember well,
Their friends and cars, events long past.
What day it is they cannot tell,
Their present recalls do not last.

Some have been locked within their mind.
The barriers they do not see.
It's not in them to be unkind.
They yell at us to set them free.

If only someone else would care;
They seem to be so all alone.
Their children had no time to spare.
It's modern 'life' that sets this tone.

There was one daughter with her mom.
To her she shouts, "Don't make a fuss!"
I wished to say, "Respect her some."
In a few years she will be us.

PROGRESS

"They" say we made progress today.
I say to them, we've lost our way.
To border walls he's added length.
George says that means we've gained more strength.

Steve blessed our border guards with guns.
We both fight terror with more funds.
The GDP went up some more.
A few got richer; most got poor.

More suffer with obesity;
But ever more kids won't reach three.
Some to ourselves more toys we give
While more can't find a place to live.

Each day new drugs  some lives extend.
Their cost is more than most can spend.
Some more into our faiths were born
To follow paths that are well worn;

But meaning not felt in old ground,
Another group a new one found.
The smog alerts increased this year.
It matters not. There is less fear

Of lives all being thus destroyed
Then spending less to fill the void.
This  'progress' life can not sustain;
And this life will not come again.

QUESTIONS

The%20Visionaries%201.jpg

The%20Visionaries%201.jpg

I've tried to wait upon you Lord.
Have I soared on those eagle wings?
I've worked, I did not sit and wait,
With faith toward those unseen things.

I hope and pray with all my might
My faith will soon be justified.
But there's such fear I've been a fool.
I do not know. Should I have tried?

I could have gone another way.
There are so many paths of dirt,
Each with their guards and signs and lights.
Why risk a crash, my being hurt?

I sense that life could be much more
Than conflict, hunger, fear and  hate.
There could be courage, peace and love.
But should I care we're in this state?

I seem here with these thoughts alone.
So should I be  where others plod?
What is the reason I am here?
Am I a fool? Are you there God?

MOTHER'S DREAM

fimg_0002.jpg

I go to sleep; I'm forty-three.
With my five kids and spouse with me
We're at our cottage by the lake.
We swim, we sail and then we take

A boat ride to blueberry hill
Where we all pick for pies to fill.
The evening comes, the lake's like glass
That cracks as loons and beavers pass.

Then crickets start their nightly tune
Which ends the day, oh far too soon.
It's so much fun to be alive.
I wake confused; I'm ninety-five.

TOGETHER

We’re all in this together mate.
So we'll all suffer the same fate.
Although we each have our own ‘boat’
There’s just one ‘sea’ on which to float.

Clean mountain air I used to breathe
Is fouled by what the cities leave.
And smoke from fires anywhere
Contaminates our global air.
When some strip oceans, forests, streams,
We’ll all hear Mother Nature's screams.

Although we are uniquely bred,
We weave life with a common thread.
We’re in reaction to the void
Which we're all trying to avoid;
But fail no matter how we try
To simply answer “why am I?”

We try to fill the void with cash,
The stuff it buys or with a stash.
Religions and philosophies,
And content overload we seize.
With food, drugs, sex and alcohol,
On jobs and families we call.
With love, and too preeminence
We try to fill the void with sense.
With one we try or maybe all;
No matter, with them we still fall.
That they divide us we can tell,
Our tries create a common hell.
With different activity
We all divide humanity.

Since there’s just one sea we're not smart
To live with whys that are apart.
Together is how we’ll endure
The feelings we are insecure.
By living lives that separate
We’re in a constant lonely state.
Apart we can't remain alive.
Together is how we survive.

So if we don't want life to pass
We must get off our common ass.
Together we must see what’s right
Revealed in Mother Nature’s ‘light’.
They’re natural activities
Which fill up our capacities
That are unique by Nature picked
And so with others don’t conflict.
We must seek help from others too,
Alone we can’t know right to do.
And finally we must applaud
Acknowledgement of Nature’s God.

Together we must see this 'light'.
For on our own we'll lose the fight.
And at the end we'll not begin
Another fight that we might win.
When life is over, our will done
Apart, no one will see the sun.
